The All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) in Shanghai will not go ahead in 2020.

Organisers issued a statement on July 15 to say the event would not go ahead as planned in the first days of September. It will be August 31 to September 2, 2021.

The statement said the organisers had made “major adjustments” to be able to go ahead in 2020, but said that a decision in China to enforce 14-day quarantine orders on visitors from overseas had led to the decision to postpone the event until next year.

China’s ministry of commerce, ministry of public security and its national health commission issued new guidelines on July 3, requesting that “large-scale, foreign-related exhibitions be held cautiously”, with strict requirements including limiting the number of people attending.

“Under these circumstances and after several in-depth communications,” the organisers said, “in view of the health and safety of our exhibitors and buyers and the impact on the exhibition, [we] made the hard decision to announce that ACLE will be postponed [in] 2020 until August 31 to September 2, 2021 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center.”

Li Yuzhong, chairman of the China Leather Industry Association, said: “The decision to postpone this year’s ACLE is a prudent one, agreed by organisers after many discussions and judgments. The purpose is to protect the interests of exhibitors and buyers. The postponement allows us to have sufficient time to make the next year's exhibition more fruitful and exciting. Facing the plight of the pandemic, the industry must prepare well for foreseeable challenges. I am sure the pandemic is temporary, and everyone can prepare fully for a brighter future.”
