The government and the country’s leather sector businesses on Sunday set the lowest-ever prices for the rawhides of animals to be sacrificed during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, one of the largest religious festivals of the Muslims.

Although the average annual inflation increased to 5.65 per cent in the just concluded financial year of 2019-2020, commerce minister Tipu Munshi announced the prices of rawhides of sacrificial animals 29 per cent lower than the prices set in the last year.

The commerce minister on the day at a virtual meeting with the leather sector business leaders announced the prices of salted cowhide at Tk 35-40 a square foot in Dhaka.

The minister announced the prices of salted cowhide at Tk 28-32 a square foot for outside Dhaka, which is 20 per cent lower than the last year’s prices.

The prices of castrated-goat skin were announced at Tk 13-15 a square foot with a 27-per cent decrease from the last year’s prices. The prices of goatskin were set at Tk 10-12 a square foot, down 22 per cent from the last year.

The announced prices of rawhides are the lowest ever in the history of the country’s leather industry, sector people said.

Last year, the government had set cowhide prices at Tk 45-50 a square foot in Dhaka and Tk 35-40 a square foot outside Dhaka. The prices of castrated-goat skin were set at Tk 18-20 a square foot and that of goatskin at Tk 13-15 a square foot across the country.

Like the previous years, slow demand on the global market, relocation of tanneries and fall in prices of rawhides on the international market have been used as pretexts for setting the prices of rawhide of sacrificial animals this year.

This year, the commerce minister and the country’s leather sector businesses have included the coronavirus pandemic to the list.

Tipu Munshi said that a major destination of Bangladesh’s leather was China but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the exports of leather and leather goods would decrease.

In this circumstance, the government has decided to keep open the provision of exporting rawhides and wet blue.

‘If necessary, we will export rawhides,’ the commerce minister said.

According to the statistics, the government and traders have been cutting prices of rawhides of sacrificial animals every year since 2013 while the prices of sacrificial animals more than doubled in the last eight years.

In the name of bringing discipline to the rawhide market, tanners have started setting the prices of rawhides since 2013.

According to the sector leaders, in the years of 2011 and 2012 tanners did not set the prices of rawhides of the sacrificial animals and the market prices of cowhide were Tk 110-120 a square foot across the country in the years.

In 2014, tanners had set the prices of per square foot of cowhide at Tk 70-75 in Dhaka and Tk 60-65 outside Dhaka, goatskin at Tk 30-35 and buffalo skin at Tk 35-40 while they had set the prices of per square foot of cowhide at Tk 85-95 in Dhaka and Tk 75-80 outside the capital, goatskin at Tk 50-55 and buffalo skin at Tk 40-45 in the year 2013.

In 2015, tanners had set the prices of cowhide at Tk 50-55 a square foot in Dhaka and Tk 40-45 a square foot outside Dhaka.

In 2016, tanners had set the prices of cowhide at Tk 50 a square foot in Dhaka and Tk 40 a square foot outside Dhaka, castrated-goat skin at Tk 20-22 a square foot and that of goatskin at Tk 15-17 a square foot.

In 2017, the government had set the cowhide prices at Tk 50-55 a square foot in Dhaka and Tk 40-45 a square foot outside Dhaka. The prices of castrated-goat skin were set at Tk 20-22 a square foot and that of goatskin at Tk 15-17 a square foot across the country.

In 2018, the government had set the cowhide prices at Tk 45-50 a square foot in Dhaka and Tk 35-40 a square foot outside Dhaka. The prices of castrated-goat skin were set at Tk 18-20 a square foot and that of goatskin at Tk 13-15 a square foot across the country.

Tannery sector business leaders expressed their satisfaction as the government took their recommendations into consideration and set low prices of rawhide. Commerce secretary Md Jafar Uddin, Bangladesh Tanners Association chairman Md Shaheen Ahmed, Leather Goods and Footwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association of Bangladesh president Md Saiful Islam, Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leathergoods & Footwear Exporters Association president Mohiuddin Ahmed Mahin and Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchants’ Association president Aftab Ahmed spoke at the meeting, among others.
