International Tanning Industry Development Summit held in Shanghai

The International Leather Industry Development Summit was held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center on August 29, 2023, which was organized by CLIA, Tanning Committee of CLIA, Beijing Leather magazine, and China Leather Net(chinaleather.org).



Li Yuzhong, Vice president of China National Council of Light Industry and the president of CLIA, professor Shi Bi, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, from Sichuan University, Lucina Tatiana, president of Belarusian State Light Industry Kangzeen, and Andrei Andreev, Consul General of the Consulate General of the Republic of Belarus in Shanghai, Consular officer Haraush Konstantin from Shanghai Consulate, Fernando Bellese, Senior director of Beef and leather supply chain markets at WWF, Deborah Taylor, adviser to the United Nations Economic Commission and director of the Leather Sustainability Foundation, Jay Jensen, former president of The Leather and Hide Council of America, Vice President of The Leather and Hide Council of America, were invited as guests attending this forum. There were 110 delegates from the industry participated in the forum.

The forum focused on the topic of "Implementing the dual-carbon strategy to empower the green development", 6 guests were invited to deliver their keynote speeches on the global leather green development and the road of green, low-carbon and high-quality development of the leather industry.

Li Yuhong pointed out in his speech that statistics show the current emissions of pollutants in China's tanning industry have been significantly reduced, including wastewater emissions reduced by more than 28%, COD emissions reduced by more than 78%, ammonia nitrogen emissions reduced by more than 82% while compared with that of 2010, and China's tanning industry has achieved remarkable results on the green and low-carbon development.

Lucina Tatiana, president of Belarusian State Light Industry Kangzeen, said on her speech, In 2022, Belarusian Kangzeen 's exports to China increased by four times, including leather products. The Belarusian tanning industry is dominated by four companies, which supply the leather to the country's leather products manufacturers. These high-quality, natural leather produced in Belarus, in addition to meeting the needs of domestic mearket, can also meet the export demand of leather products. In 2022, the exported value of leather products from Belarus to China exceeded $4 million. There were more than 70 enterprises in Belarus for making footwear and leather products, handbags, bags and so on.

She also said that the memorandum of cooperation signed by between Belarus and CLIA is undoubtedly a measure to strengthen the cooperation between China and Belarus leather industry. I believe that the memorandum will promote the Belt and Road Initiative and both sides’ business cooperation in the future.

The most concerned issues of traceability, climate change,carbon emission reduction and sustainable development were discussed on the forum.
