Polyolefin solutions provider Borealis has launched a new grade of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) made from renewable feedstocks for use in footwear midsoles.
The material, part of the company’s Bornewables portfolio, is designed to offer the same performance as conventional fossil-based EVA while reducing the carbon footprint of midsole components by 45%.
EVA is a lightweight, foam-like polymer commonly used in midsoles for its cushioning and durability. The renewable feedstocks used in the new grade include waste and residue streams from vegetable oil production, timber processing, and the food industry. The Bornewables range is ISCC PLUS certified, ensuring traceability throughout the supply chain.
The first commercial application of the new EVA grade is in the Cloud 6 lifestyle shoe from Swiss footwear brand On.
