China Leather Industry Association

3 March 2021

Preface

China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) has begun the project of statistics on the fur-bearing animalsincluding mink, fox and raccoonin China since 2011. The statistical project is mainly undertaken by China Fur Breeders Commission of CLIA with the statistical method dominated by collecting survey data. The statistical regions cover Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Shandong and Hebei which are concentrated areas for fur farming and some other regions.

China Fur Breeders Commission began the statistics for the production of skins of mink, fox and raccoon in the middle of December 2020 and finished in endFebruary 2021. This report conducts an analysis on statistics data of skins production of mink, fox and raccoon in 2020. Please specify it is from CLIA when relevant media and individuals quote this report and any content therein.

This work was supported by the chairman, vice chairman and some members of China Fur Breeders Commission which was very much appreciated.

III. Summary and Suggestions

1.Influnced by Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia and other related factors, the fur products sales were not good in main consuming countries and districts such as Russia, Korea, European countries and US in 2020, the exportation of our fur raw materials and fur products declined by a large margin, China domestic sales have also declined to a certain extent, and the global demand for fur raw materials in 2020 showed a sharp reduction. Given that the situation of Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia in most countries and regions doesn’t get better, the reduction is likely to be continuedin 2021.

2. Influenced by the tremendous reduction of mink in Denmark and Netherlands and so on, the expectations of fur buyers for the future supply and demand of mink skins have changed significantly, resulting in the price of fur skins rising in varying degrees from the end of 2020. In February 2021, the price of some varieties and quality of mink skins even increased by more than 50% on the basis of that of the international auction in September 2020.From the perspective of global fur supply and demand, the mink skins in stock and newly produced are enough to meet the market demand, so as to fox skins and raccoon skins. Therefore, CLIA suggest that farmers should not expand the production blindly. On the premise of no unforeseen factors, it is expected that the priceof mink, fox and raccoon skins will be ups and downs on current price basis in 2021.

3. In recent years, with big drops of fur animal numbers, finebreeders and high-quality skins will become the core competitive factors for breeding enterprises.CLIA suggests that fur animal breeding farmers should be breeding scientifically and safely, especially strengthening the work of epidemic prevention and control, paying attention to feed nutrition, and focusing on improving breeders’ qualityandelevate puppies’survival rate.CLIA will continue the statistics for the production of skins of mink, fox and raccoon and provide industrial reference information. In 2020CLIA will continue to carry out the identification work of ‘GOOD4FUR CERTIFIED FARM’leading domestic farms to improve animal welfare level.
