Leather Working Group (LWG) hosted a stakeholder meeting during the APLF leather fair and updated stakeholders on its lifecycle assessment (LCA) dataset results for leather.
LWG collaborated with Leather Naturally and consultant Spin 360 to provide new datasets to update leather’s score on the Higg Material Sustainability Index.
The results have been published in the LWG’s 2024 LCA Report, where the organisations selected 50 leather products produced globally across six categories to provide updated figures, which were then submitted to and have been accepted by Higg.
An overview of results was presented to stakeholders during the meeting. They include a 60% reduction in global warming potential, a 63% reduction in eutrophication, a 60% decline in water scarcity figures, a 43% fall in resource depletion/fossil fuel use and a 67% decrease in chemicals footprint compared with the old Higg score for leather.
