CHINESE TAIWAN-based sports footwear multinational Sports Gear has inaugurated its first factory in Portugal, aiming to produce 200,000 pairs in its first year and triple output by 2027, according to Diário de Notícias.
The €15.3 billion (US$16.75 billion) facility in Estarreja currently employs 20 workers, with plans to double the workforce by July.
The company, which supplies brands such as Adidas, Nike, and Puma, employs over 30,000 workers globally and manufactured 36 million pairs in 2024, generating US$573 million in sales.
The new factory strengthens production close to the European market, leveraging Portugal’s long-standing expertise in footwear manufacturing.
Sports Gear has partnered with Portuguese precision machining multinational FFI Group, which supported the factory’s development. The facility aims to become a reference centre for sports shoe production, with a focus on automation and innovation.
Spokesperson Ben Metcalf indicated that while current efforts are on launching operations smoothly, future expansion in Portugal remains a possibility.
