Tannery workers in Bangladesh have withdrawn their strike following a meeting with employers and industry leaders over the implementation of government-declared minimum wages across five grading levels.
The meeting, held on Thursday at the Dhanmondi office of the Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters’ Association, resulted in the formation of a committee to review the grading system and wage implementation. The committee includes representatives from the Bangladesh Tanners Association, the Finished Leather Association, and the Tannery Workers Union.
“All ongoing protests and work stoppages regarding the demand for minimum wage implementation have been withdrawn,” Tannery Workers Union General Secretary Abdul Malek told The Business Standard after the meeting.
Md Sakhawat Ullah, Senior Vice President of the Bangladesh Tanners Association, confirmed that the committee would review the grading system and submit recommendations within the next eight to 10 days. A follow-up meeting to finaliSe decisions is scheduled for 28 April.
