Bangladesh JW Animal Protein, a subsidiary of China’s Wenzhou Yuanfei and Pingyang, has already established a facility in Savar to produce gelatine. The company is now expanding its operations to also manufacture industrial protein powder using tannery waste as the primary input.

Company representatives stated that the protein powder will be used in the leather finishing process to soften hides, while the gelatine will serve as a base material for pharmaceutical capsule coatings. These are currently imported by local industries.

According to its business plan, the company intends to export approximately 5,000 tonnes annually of gelatine and industrial protein powder to China and Russia.

Golam Shahnewaz, Managing Director of the Dhaka Tannery Industrial Estate Waste Treatment Plant Company, confirmed that JW Animal Protein will collect chrome shaving dust from across the estate and is building a new factory equipped with an effluent treatment plant (ETP) on nine acres of land in Nayarhat, Savar.

He noted that the factory is already producing gelatine from raw hide trimmings and intends to recover chrome from chrome shaving dust to produce protein powder. The company has obtained clearance from the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority to carry out these operations.
