The Nigerian government has targeted the widespread consumption of hides and skins as it aims to develop the livestock supply chain.

Known as “gbomo” or “ponmo”, the country reportedly loses at least N23 billion annually and 700,000 potential jobs to the practice.
Mukhtar Maiha, Minister of Livestock Development, warned of the health risks associated with the practice, including cancer, urging Nigerians to reconsider their dietary choices. He unveiled plans to expand Nigeria’s livestock market from US$32 billion to US$74 billion by 2035, aiming to position the country among global leaders like Brazil and the U.S.
Key objectives include boosting livestock production, enhancing food security, and strengthening regulations. Nigeria has also secured partnerships with countries such as Brazil, China, and the U.S. to attract investment in meat processing, dairy production, and cold-chain logistics.
The Ministry of Livestock Development was established in July 2024 with the goal of developing the country’s livestock and associated industries.
