Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, visited Mumbai’s Dharavi leather hub, where he interacted with leather industry workers and entrepreneurs. His visit aimed to understand the challenges faced by the workforce in one of the largest leather manufacturing hubs in the world.

Dharavi is home to thousands of leather manufacturing units, employing over one lakh workers. This bustling hub has long been a significant player in India’s leather industry, with artisans crafting high-quality leather goods that reach markets across the globe.

During his visit, Gandhi toured several manufacturing units, including Chamar Studio, a brand founded by Sudheer Rajbhar. This studio is known for its innovative approach, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design to create globally recognized leather products.

Gandhi engaged with the workers and entrepreneurs, listening to their concerns about the leather industry’s current challenges. He emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for talented artisans who often struggle due to a lack of access to elite markets.

He praised Rajbhar for building his own network and recognizing the potential of Dharavi’s artisans. He acknowledged how Chamar Studio has successfully brought global recognition to these artisans by blending traditional skills with modern entrepreneurship.

Gandhi stressed the significance of inclusive production networks that uplift skilled workers.

As part of his initiative to bridge knowledge gaps, Gandhi introduced Ramchet Mochi from Sultanpur to Rajbhar. He emphasized how design and innovation can transform local businesses, offering insights into how small-scale entrepreneurs can scale their operations.

Gandhi reiterated in Lok Sabha that a truly prosperous India can only be built through “production and participation.”

During the visit, the leather industry workers gifted Rahul Gandhi and his family leather bags and wallets, symbolizing their appreciation for his engagement with their community.
