On May 13, COTANCE held an online meeting with Member of the European Parliament Christine Schneider to discuss challenges around EUDR.
The meeting, hosted by the Confederation of National Associations of Tanners and Dressers of the European Community (COTANCE), also included representatives from its member organisations UNIC – Concerie Italiane (Italy) and Verband der Deutschen Lederindustrie (VDL, Germany).
The discussion focused on the current implementation challenges of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and the ongoing revision of Annex I under Article 34.
Schneider, a key contributor to the European Parliament’s amendments to the EUDR adopted in October 2024, has advocated for a minimum two-year delay in the regulation’s entry into force.
During the meeting, she provided updates on the European Commission’s upcoming simplification packages, the proposed country benchmarking system, and the potential for further postponement of the regulation.
COTANCE raised concerns about the EUDR’s implications for the leather sector, particularly in terms of its impact on employment and global competitiveness. The organisation reiterated its position that the regulation, in its current form, may not effectively address illegal deforestation and continues to advocate for the exclusion of hides, skins, and leather from its scope.
