The second Yongzhou (Lanshan) International Leatherware, Bags and Suitcases Expo recently concluded in Lanshan county, Hunan province, China.
Co-sponsored by several local government departments and jointly organised by Yongzhou administrators, the three-day hybrid event took place both within a roughly 23,000-square-metre space staffed by about 300 exhibitors and online.
Local media reported a daily attendance figure of 8,000.
Executive vice chairman and secretary general of China Leather Industry Association (CLIA), Chen Zhanguang, was among those, including local party officials, who delivered speeches during the exhibition.
The Lanshan Cup, a competition celebrating original design, was one of the expo’s main draws. Hand-picked from 278 local entrants in total, from both education and enterprise, the winners received their awards on-stage alongside Mr Chen, who participated in the prize-giving ceremony.
According to reports, Lanshan county has been striving to attain the status of “China’s leathergoods and luggage innovation capital” in recent years and it is presently enjoying a period of “strong momentum” towards this goal. Leathergoods, luggage and toys have been identified as a key industrial cluster for the province as a whole, as well as together forming one aspect of Yongzhou’s five-point “industrial alliance”.
Reportedly, Lanshan is currently home to over 130 leathergoods, luggage and toy companies, representing a total investment of approximately $1.73 billion (¥11 billion).
Between January and October, the county’s leathergoods and luggage businesses “above [an unspecified] designated size” alone produced articles to the value of roughly $465 million or ¥2.96 billion, representing year-on-year growth of 153.6%.
