The founder of Wenzhou-based shoe brand Kangnai, Zheng Xiukang, has passed away.

China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) described Mr Zheng’s death as a “major loss” to the country’s leather and footwear industries. He was a role model for a generation, CLIA said.

Well-respected as an early pioneer of mechanised production in Wenzhou, Mr Zheng was also a published author, a registrant of more than 70 technical patents and a contributor to national standards for leather footwear in China.

Over the years, the businessman variously served as vice-chair of the China National Light Industry Council, vice-chair of CLIA, executive vice-chair of Zhejiang Leather Industry Association and lifetime honorary chair of the Wenzhou Shoe and Leather Industry Association, among other commitments.

He was also the recipient of numerous awards for his entrepreneurship.

Mr Zheng was succeeded at Kangnai by a daughter, Zheng Laili, and son, Zheng Laiyi, around a decade ago.
