Outdoor brand L L Bean has announced a second round of layoffs this year, affecting an estimated 3% of its workforce in Maine.
Media reports suggest the latest reductions will impact between 50 and 75 employees, following an earlier round of job cuts in April.
In a statement, the company attributed the layoffs to “fluctuating retail landscapes” and the need to “enable long-term growth.” the company pointed to a shift in consumer behaviour, with increasing online shopping and fewer calls to customer service as key factors influencing its decision.
“Impacting people’s jobs and schedules is never a decision L L Bean makes lightly,” the company noted in its release, underscoring the gravity of the situation for affected employees.
The announcement reflects ongoing challenges in the retail industry as businesses adapt to evolving market dynamics and changing consumer preferences.
