Official figures from Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA) show the
hide industry is likely to report decline in leather export sales in 2024. The Vice
President of LHCA (Leather and Hide Council of America) Kevin Latner offered
Leather Insiders team interesting observations regarding current American
leather industry state of health.
“Currently both American meat and leather markets supply and prices are
depressed” began Mr. Latner to depict current situation America is living.
“Supply is depressed because the US herd is in a rebuilding phase, while prices
are low because of an overall slowdown in demand along the leather supply
chain”.
What about the most important changes in the global leather industry during
2024? “A slowing global economic environment and
constrained consumer spending reduced demand through 2024. This can be seen in
fewer luxury goods, fewer car sales and more modest models, as well as fewer
furniture purchases”.
“Talking about the main reason US slaughtering levels have declined
since last two years, I may say, as noted above, that US slaughter
declined starting in late 2023 as ranchers began rebuilding herd size. This
rebuilding usually takes 3-5 years”.
Almost a month since the US elections saw Trump coming out victorious, Mr.
Latner stated to our team it is currently really difficult to predict new US
administration policies, like for example the prediction of many regarding the
imposition of new tariffs on China.
A pleasant mention to LHCA’s ‘Real Leather, Stay Different’ campaign and
the main achievements since it was introduced. “By celebrating leather use and
supporting leather lovers, the ‘Real Leather, Stay Different’ campaign has
changed the narrative around the use of leather and driven increased pushback
on marketing threats posed by anti-animal activists” commented LHCA Vice
President.
We then closed the interview to Mr. Kevin Latner, whom we deeply thank for
his cooperation, by asking the Vice President his current goals and priorities
for the Leather and Hide Council of America. “The Leather and Hide Council of
America’s goals continue to be the support of US hide exports and the expansion
of the global market for leather”.
