Employment in Spain’s footwear and leather industries declined slightly in May 2025, marking the third consecutive monthly decrease.
According to Social Security data, the sector averaged 37,510 registered workers in May – 31 fewer than in April, representing a 0.1% monthly drop. Compared with the same month in 2024, employment fell by 4.5%, with a loss of 1,769 jobs.
In May, Spain’s overall labour market reached a record high, surpassing 21.8 million registered workers for the first time.
Of those employed in the footwear and leather sectors in May 2025, 89.7% (33,660 workers) were registered under the general Social Security system, while 10.3% (3,850) were self-employed.
The workforce was nearly evenly split by gender: 51.6% (19,356 workers) were men and 48.4% (18,154) were women.
