Most companies are focused on managing existing operations rather than pursuing new raw material purchases ahead of the summer holidays. Leather demand is stable but unremarkable, and no significant positive surprises are expected in raw material needs.
Production schedules are being adjusted for the upcoming holiday period, though uncertainties remain about the extent and duration of operational slowdowns, particularly in beamhouse processing.
Overseas, the export situation to China remains unresolved due to ongoing restrictions tied to a past foot-and-mouth disease case, limiting summer export opportunities – particularly for cow hides, which face surplus challenges without Chinese demand. Meanwhile, trade to other markets, including the Indian subcontinent, continues at a limited pace, with only minor price fluctuations.
Bull hides and heifers show slightly more stability, but without increased demand, defending current price levels long-term may prove difficult. Kill numbers have slightly increased, especially among male cattle, possibly due to favourable live cattle prices ahead of the holidays. However, regional variations in public holidays will likely affect slaughter volumes in the coming weeks.
