Mauritius could soon become a major player in the African leather industry, thanks to a new study presented by the African Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI).

On June 11, 2025, ALLPI’s Executive Director, Nicholas Mudungwe, shared the results of the Mauritius Leather Sector Assessment during a presentation under the Technical Assistance Facility (TAF).

The study took a deep look at the entire leather value chain in Mauritius from the availability of raw materials and tanning capabilities to manufacturing, trade, and export potential.
One of the key findings was a clear mismatch between local production and market demand. While Mauritius has the institutional strength, it lacks enough local production to meet both domestic and global needs.

The study also mapped potential suppliers and import sources that Mauritius can partner with to fill these gaps.

Other highlights included:

  • Focused plans for growing the leather goods cluster
  • Strategies to improve workforce skills
  • Steps to boost the country’s competitiveness in exports
  • Clear chances for Mauritius to work with global fashion brands and African markets under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)
