CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) is making steady progress on the proposed Modjo Leather City (MLC) project in Ethiopia.
From June 23 to 26, 2025, the CLRI team held key technical discussions with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and consultants leading the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for the project.
On June 27, the CLRI team presented an updated feasibility report for Modjo Leather City at the Ministry of Industry in Ethiopia.
The meeting was chaired by H.E. Mr. Melaku Alebel, Senior Minister, and attended by State Ministers H.E. Hassan Mohammed and H.E. Tarekegn Bululta.
Representatives from UNIDO, the Ministry of Industry and Innovation (MIDI), the Leather and Leather Products Industry Research and Development Center (LLPIRDC), and the Technical Task Force were also present.
The presentation was approved and well-received by the ministry. Following this, CLRI has been officially invited to present the proposal at the Council meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office on July 8, 2025.
The Modjo Leather City aims to be a hub for sustainable and responsible leather production in East Africa, positioning Ethiopia as a regional leader in the global leather value chain.
