The winner of the 11th edition of Craft the Leather has been announced, following a showcase and voting at 105th edition of Lineapelle in Milan.
Roots and Modernity at Lineapelle.
The competition, run by the Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather consortium, awards a cash prize to the winner to continue their design education.
Votes from the technical jury and Lineapelle visitors resulted in Asahi Sato from the Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry being chosen as the winner for her collection Roots and Modernity.
In the footwear capsule collection, Sato said that she wanted to emphasise the connection between raw material and craftsmanship. With the aim of highlighting the unique characteristics of vegetable-tanned leather, the soles were shaped by working with damp leather, creating organic ripples that give the shoe a distinctive identity.
Meanwhile, voting on social media favoured Ana del Rio, a student from De Montfort University, for her Salmantina collection. Overall voting tied del Rio for second place with Dempsey Pauwels from d’Academie Beels Sin-Niklaas for the LEXaqua collection.
