The Bangladeshi government has agreed not pursue central effluent treatment plant (CETP) developments at the Savar Tannery Industrial Estate under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

The decision not to fund the Rectification and Upgradation of CETP and Establishment of SWM at BSCIC Tannery Industrial Estate, Dhaka project under PPP was made during the 19th meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Economic Affairs.

A survey was reportedly conducted by the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) and the CETP authority, which found that implementing the project under the PPP model would not be economically viable for the tannery sector. Based on these findings, the government opted not to proceed with the PPP approach.

Meanwhile, a separate feasibility study on the rectification and capacity enhancement of the CETP is currently underway.

This study is being supported by funding from the European Union and technical assistance from Italian machinery firm Italprogetti. The CETP authority has expressed optimism about the potential outcomes of the assessment.
