Campaigners have launched a petition to oppose the closure of Walsall Leather Museum in the United Kingdom by the local government.
Walsall Council is considering proposals in February that include closing the museum and digitising parts of the collection, moving some of the physical items to a new location.
The museum is currently located in a Victorian-era former tannery, which displays the history of the material and its links to the history of the town, especially know for the manufacture of heavy leathers such as industrial and equestrian.
Lauren Broxton, an organiser of the petition, said on LinkedIn: “We’re well aware that the justification for trying to seal this proposal will be that the collections and artefacts will be housed elsewhere. This simply isn’t good enough. We know from past experience and from simple logistics that this will mean a significant downsizing of the collection.
“What’s more – the building itself is an integral part of the experience. It is living and breathing histories – not just of a town but of its people, our mothers and fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers. That is how broad this heritage goes – over 10,000 people were employed in the industry at its peak.”
The draft budget proposing the closure of the museum will be presented on February 12 with final decisions on February 26.
